The Night at the River - Song Cycle

In my younger days I also did a bit of songwriting, and at the dawn of the millennium (this one) I decided to record my works. I know my voice is awful, but I think the tunes themselves are quite nice.

The Flight of the Swan

I stand at the river, admiring his guise,
his lily-white garment, his black magic eyes.
Then he leaves again, and I watch his flight
in the summer night,
the night of the swan.

I stand at the river, alone with the moon;
there is not a whisper, no breeze and no tune,
and the emptiness is the only sight
of the summer night,
the night of the swan.

Shadows are falling,
someone is calling the rain,
birds try to fly it,
then all is quiet again.

But I know you’re out there, you’re out there somewhere,
and I will find you, I’ll find you right there,
and the stars will smile with their brightest light
through the summer night,
the night of the swan.

Dreamboat

Dreamboat, don't sail by,
for the night is nigh,
and the ocean is rough when the storm clouds have spoken,
your prow will be smashed, your tall masts will be broken -
Dreamboat, don't sail by.

Dreamboat, don't sail by,
see the clouded sky;
here's a harbour to anchor, a galley to capture,
a soul to destroy at your pleasure and rapture,
Dreamboat, don't sail by.

The Little People and the Lonely Lover (instrumental)

The Sparrow's Song

Sparrow, Sparrow, sing a song,
sing a song all morning long,
sing along, and you shall see:
my true love will come to me!

Sparrow, Sparrow, sing a tune,
sing all noon and afternoon,
sing along, and she will swear
I’m the only one for her!

Sparrow, Sparrow, sing it right,
sing all evening and all night,
sing along, and I shall pray
that this time my love will stay!

Tír na nÓg

Once I sat on the banks
of the river,
and I felt that I grew old.

And the wind whispered low,
'Eat your lotus,
and you’ll be forever young.'

And the waves softly sang,
'Drink your Lethe,
and you’ll be forever young.'

And the ferryman said,
'Cross the river,
and you'll be forever young.'

The Starling’s Song

One day the song of the starling
was heard between the firs;
there she lay down with her darling
and pressed my breast against hers.

And she said to me, 'I will never
be with another man,
for I’ll be yours forever
again and again and again!'

Next day the song of the starling
was heard between the firs;
there she lay down with her darling
and pressed his breast against hers.

And she said to him, 'I will never
be with another man,
for I’ll be yours forever
again and again and again!'

Everybody But Me

Everybody has a party but me,
everybody says you’re tarty but me,
everybody, everybody but me.

Everybody calls you shoddy but me,
everybody knows your body but me,
everybody, everybody but me.

Every time I look you kiss another,
then I look again and you shift his brother,
how long must I wait for my turn?

Everybody has a session but me,
everybody knows your passion but me,
everybody, everybody but me.

He Made Your Eyes

He made your eyes to look at me,
He made your lips to say you’re free,
He made your hand to wear your glove,
He made your heart to fall in love.

He made your feet to do the stroll,
He made your legs to rock ’n’ roll,
He made your knees to shake with might,
He made your thighs to treat me right.

Now if you’d go I’d be so blue,
I would be crying over you,
but if you say you’re gonna stay with me
I’ll be as glad as I can be.

The Flight of the Swan (reprise)

But I know you’re out there, you’re out there somewhere,
and I will find you, I’ll find you right there,
and the moon will smile with his brightest light
through the summer night,
the night of the swan.
